Acquisitions To Aid Staples In Intranet Services

In the latest example of the Internet enabling a company toadd new products and services, Staples Inc. said yesterday that it has invested in two Net technology companies, HotOffice Technologies Inc. and DSL.net Inc.

Technologies from both companies are expected to help Staples expand its offerings of intranet services to small businesses. Staples sells office supplies online through its Staples.com Web site, but also sells services to enable those customers to set up their own intranets for employee communication.

Staples invested $6 million in HotOffice, an application service provider for remote access and intranet apps, and $3.5 million in DSL.net, a provider of digital subscriber line technology and high-speed Internet access.

"Providing a tool to efficiently and effectively host and operate an intranet is just one more way we can help [our customers] slash the cost and hassle of running their offices," Staples chairman and CEO Thomas Stemberg said in a statement.
