Adobe Systems Inc. yesterday unveiled the latest version ofits Acrobat tool for document exchange in heterogeneousenvironments. Version 4.0 includes features that make iteasier to use Web content, to secure documents, and to editfiles.
Acrobat 4.0, which uses Portable Document Format, adds a newset of annotation and security tools for transforming andconveying documents written in different formats. Theapplication gives users a simple way to convert a filewritten in virtually any format into a PDF file by draggingand dropping the file to the Acrobat icon. The new AdobePDFMaker utility also lets users convert Microsoft Word,Excel, and PowerPoint files from within those applicationsthemselves.
Acrobat 4.0 captures Web pages or entire Web sites and turnsthem into fully formatted PDF files. The application alsocan secure files through a certificate system that validatesusers' identities. The software, which will ship in thesecond half of the year, is priced at $249. Users canupgrade from earlier versions for $99.
