Amdahl Corp., a subsidiary of Fujitsu Ltd., will advance its business model more fully into the IT services market with Friday's launch of its InfraCare suite of consulting, implementation, and ongoing managed services. Although InfraCare includes many of the basic project design and management services generally available to IT customers from a variety of large service providers, Amdahl's new service offering is notable because it leverages Fujitsu's sizable IT infrastructure worldwide.
InfraCare is a catchall service whereby Amdahl becomes its clients' central provider for a variety of services, from managing IT equipment warranties to redesigning IT architectures for increased storage capacity and faster performance. Amdahl says a client with multinational operations can expect to pay $10 million to $50 million over the life of an InfraCare contract, with payments spread out on a monthly basis.
InfraCare was chosen by @Outcome Inc., a privately held Austin, Texas, developer of Web-based supply-chain software for the health-care industry, because the service had very little up-front cost and was backed by a service provider with global reach. "We were looking for a partner with a global presence to help us manage our infrastructure because our clients want to deploy our technology globally," says Bill Cowan, @Outcome's chairman and CEO. While Cowan wouldn't disclose the amount he's paying per month for InfraCare, he says Amdahl's fee structure took into account that @Outcome is an emerging company without the financials to make a large investment in data center technology at this time.
Amdahl's services are representative of a technology company reinventing itself to grab a piece of the IT services market without really distinguishing itself as a service provider, says Joel Yaffe, a Giga Information Group senior industry analyst. Given the shakiness of the world's economy, Yaffe says, Amdahl's greatest asset is that the company already has the staff and infrastructure in place to deliver on InfraCare.
