Analyst Watch: Broadband Boom

The first quarter of 2004 saw huge growth in the number of broadband connections in the United States. A study from Leichtman Research Group says the nation's 20 largest cable and DSL providers added a total of more than 2.3 million high-speed Internet subscribers in the quarter, the largest net growth ever. The total number of broadband connections now tops 26.9 million. DSL providers added about 1.2 million subscribers, making it their best quarter ever. But the technology still lags far behind cable broadband, which accounts for 16.7 million subscribers, compared with DSL's 10.3 million. The top cable providers now own 62% of the market, compared with DSL's 38%.
