AOL Tests Mobile Search Engine

America Online’s new service automatically adapts Web search results pages to view on smartphones and PDAs.

America Online said Wednesday that it has started a public beta test of search services aimed at users of mobile devices such as smartphones and PDAs.

The Mobile AOL Search Service uses technology from Israeli vendor InfoGin that automatically adapts Web pages for viewing on smaller-screened mobile devices, the company said in a statement. The company said that provides access to virtually all Web pages, not just those on sites that are Wireless Access Protocol (WAP)-enabled.

"We have 'Right-Sized the Internet' for mobile screens, giving users the power to search or shop for anything they need," Himesh Bhise, vice president and general manager of AOL Mobile, said in a statement.

Besides searching the Web, the service gives users access to AOL's Pinpoint Shopping service and to its Yellow Pages service. Users can get information about how to use the service at AOL's Web site.
