Adobe Ships Photoshop Lightroom 2 For Windows Vista, Mac

The update features dual-monitor support, streamlined search capabilities and localized image correction.

Adobe on Tuesday said it is now shipping Photoshop Lightroom 2, a set of software tools that allow photographers to edit and manage digital images. The product is Adobe's first 64-bit application for the Mac and Windows Vista operating systems.

A significant upgrade over the previous version, Lightroom 2 features a number of new enhancements, including dual-monitor support, streamlined search capabilities and localized image correction.

Adobe said many of the improvements were based on suggestions from Lightroom users. "A worldwide community of photographers provided valuable insight and feedback," said Adobe Lightroom product manager Tom Hogarty, in a statement.

Lightroom 2 offers an enhanced Library module that, among other things, lets users organize images across multiple hard drives. A "Suggested Keywords" feature helps photographers generate searchable keywords for their images by suggesting keywords based on past choices.

An enhanced print tool allows users to arrange photos of various sizes on a single page prior to output.

The Develop module includes a new Local Adjustment brush that allows photographers to fine tune specific image areas to adjust color, exposure and tonal range without affecting other parts of the image. The Graduated Filter lets users edit larger areas by increasing adjustment effects such as exposure, clarity and saturation.

Lightroom 2's 64-bit capability should improve speed and performance, especially when working with large images, according to Adobe. The application will also run on 32-bit systems.

Lightroom 2 is available immediately for $299. Users upgrading from the previous version pay a discounted price of $99. To run the program, users will need at least a Windows XP-based computer with a Pentium 4 processor and 1 GB of memory, or a MAC OS system with a minimum of a PowerPC G4 chip and a 1 GB of memory.

To run in 64-bit mode, Lightroom 2 requires a 64-bit version of Vista or Apple's Leopard OS for Intel-based Macs.
