If Only Second Life Were Entertaining
Commentary  |  3/29/2007
I am baffled by the popularity of Second Life, particularly the media's fascination with it. Lord knows I've written my share of stories about it. I'm starting to wonder why.
SaaS at AJAX World… Not!
Commentary  |  3/28/2007
I spoke about Rich Internet Applications (RIA) at Ajax World last week… great attendance, good speakers, good topics but no SaaS. Okay, a little SaaS. I think the SaaS players need to be serious about Ajax and RIA. Ajax is changing the Web. As true dynamic Web interfaces are taking the place of static, pump-and-pull HTML/HTTP, we're seeing a sea change in what users expect from Web sites and SaaS.
Furnishing The InformationWeek Office In Second Life
Commentary  |  3/23/2007
I spent some time yesterday furnishing InformationWeek's office -- or, should I say, bureau -- in Second Life. Read on for a photo of our little office, and some discussion of how it came to pass.
Data Privacy: The Leading Roadblock to SaaS Adoption
Commentary  |  3/23/2007
As larger organizations move toward SaaS, a few organizations are pushing back on this new model citing data privacy concerns. So, is data privacy a real issue? Or are IT managers reacting more to the lack of control than to data privacy? In my experience, organizations fall into three categories in their thinking about SaaS and data privacy.
For Sale In Second Life: Amsterdam
Commentary  |  3/22/2007
Amsterdam is for sale on eBay.. It's one of the most popular areas in Second Life. More than that: It is, to Second Life, what Times Square is to New York, or Fisherman's Wharf is to San Francisco. It's one of the first places where newbies go, to look around and check out the scene.

Join Us In Second Life Tuesday For A South By Southwest Kaffeeklatsch
Commentary  |  3/12/2007
Join InformationWeek and Dr. Dobb's Journal Tuesday morning for a kaffeeklatsch to discuss the South by Southwest conference, going on this week in Austin, Texas. SXSW is one of the leading conferences for Web 2.0 and it's where I am right now. DDJ's John Jainschigg (a/k/a John Zhaoying in Second Life) has arranged a special treat for Tuesday's discussion; if you miss it, you'll want to cut out your own brain.
Web 2.0 To Web 3-D @ South By Southwest
Commentary  |  3/12/2007
Participants at the "Web 2.0 to Web 3-D" panel at South by Southwest on Monday talked quite a lot about how Web 2.0 is participatory, but virtual worlds like World of Warcraft or Second Life are immersive. That sounds like a lot of marketing baloney unless you've actually been active in a virtual world. Sure, it's engaging to be involved in a Web 2.0 site like Twitter or Digg. But, when you're active on a virtual world, you
Enterprise Architecture Modeling... On Demand?
Commentary  |  3/12/2007
I'm seeing a number of software products "SaaSifying" as software as a service becomes more accepted in enterprises. One of the most innovative is the EA WebModeler from Agilense. As explained by Steve Hunter, CTO, "EA WebModeler helps organizations understand, cost, plan, and execute enterprise change by enabling organizations to build an actionable model and plans of a future landscape."
Is Second Life Bad For You?
Commentary  |  3/6/2007
This morning's Second Life kaffeeklatsch was stimulating and entertaining, as always. The topic for today was "Is Second Life Bad for You?" We ended up talking about people for whom Second Life is a benefit because they're housebound due to physical disability, including one woman whose cancer was quite severe, for whom Second Life had become her first life.
Could Mashups Be the Killer App for SaaS?
Commentary  |  3/6/2007
Public Web APIs, such as those stood up by the likes of Google, let savvy developers take content and behavior from one SaaS and mash it together with another, thus forming a new custom application... The number and level of sophistication of mashups have grown... and this could be a new way to sell the value of SaaS. Here's why.
