I'm just back from the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston, where the big takeaway was that collaborative tools are moving out of the hype phase into the implementation mode. This means a raft of products, to be followed by a titanic market battle among Cisco, IBM, Google, Jive, and others. In 1977, Digital Equipment Corp. founder Ken Olsen said, "There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home." Another prediction's not quite as atrociously bad but almost: 22 months ago, Lawson Software CEO Harry Debes said the SaaS industry will go "nowhere" and within two years "will collapse." Word has been swirling now for a couple of months that Oracle is going to abandon the use of AMD's Opteron processor on future Sun servers. (Oracle has owned Sun Microsystems since January.)
