Ask Jeeves Inc., a question-answering Web portal, said today it has acquired Direct Hit Technologies in a stock swap of 5.12 million unregistered shares. Direct Hit Technologies provides Internet search technology and customer data for the consumer and business markets. It aggregates and organizes online content by tracking the products, services, and information that Internet users seek, as well as the amount of time they spend at participating Web sites.
Ask Jeeves hopes the search, directory, and shopping products from Direct Hit will give its business users more in-depth customer information. Ask Jeeves believes both Internet and brick-and-mortar companies will increase E-commerce conversion, reduce support costs, and improve customer-service satisfaction.
"This is a focus on corporate business," says Steve Roop, Ask Jeeves director of product management for corporate business. "Our customers, such as Office Depot and Dell, are looking for usage patterns by popularity, and Direct Hit technology provides that."
One analyst thinks the company will become more attractive to clients looking for Web services. "This fleshes out the Ask Jeeves business model," says Geoffrey Bock, senior consultant with the Patricia Seybold Group. "Companies will profit with the increased ability to find information with enhanced search capabilities."
