Multicore processor specialist Plurality Ltd. is starting to ship evaluation boards and associated development kits for its HyperCore Processor, the first designs to emerge from the work on its HyperCore Architecture Line. Commercial 64-core chips are scheduled for the third quarter of this year.

Sony Counting On PlayStation 3 And Flat TVs

Sony is forecasting sharp falls in operating profits at many of its divisions for the year ahead as it reported a Yen 66.5 billion ($581 million) loss for the January-March quarter, worse than the Yen 56.5 billion ($501 million) loss in the same period last year.

Crown Castle International has renamed its mobile TV subsidiary Modeo LLC and said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas it would launch commercial services in 30 of the largest markets across the U.S. this year based on the Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) standard.

Gartner Predicts Record Chip Sales

This year will hit $235 billion, the highest since the previous record-setter year 2000, when revenues reached $223 billion. The market research company said Friday (Dec. 9) worldwide semiconductor revenue is expected to reach $235 billion this year, a 6.9 percent increase from 2004, and the first time the sector has surpassed the previous record-setting year since 2000, when revenues reached $223 billion.

Start-up Drives Convergence Of Fixed, Mobile Phones

Wireless start-up Stoke Inc. has come out of stealth mode with its plans for an IP service delivery platform for converged fixed and mobile networks. The Mountain View, California based company also announced it has secured $20 million in Series B funding in an oversubscribed round, bringing the total funding for the company to $30 million.

Qualcomm Says Nokia Infringed 12 Patents

Qualcomm Inc. has filed patent infringement allegations against Nokia Corporation and Nokia Inc. in a federal court in San Diego claiming the phone maker has infringed eleven of its patents and one owned by its fully owned SnapTrack subsidiary.
