Banyan Intros Directory Consulting Service

The imminent arrival of Windows 2000 is opening markets for providers of directory services and software. Banyan Worldwide today launched a Corporate White Pages service for tying together operating-system and application directories at companies that are merging or rolling out electronic-business systems.

The consulting and integration service aims to create for customers a common directory accessible by the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and shared by systems such as human resources, payroll, line-of-business applications, and intranet- and extranet-based E-business applications. Banyan's White Pages offering lets IT managers control from a single view user information stored in these systems and in Windows NT domain servers and Windows 2000's Active Directory. This can reduce administration costs for companies consolidating through mergers or acquisitions and speed time to market of customers' homegrown applications, says Banyan practice director Tom Shambo.

"The network operating system today does not hold all the keys to the kingdom for each user," Shambo says. Developers writing E-business applications should be able to authenticate users against a single company directory, rather than against several systems, speeding deployment time, he explains. "The market for services to implement these types of products will be huge, because no two [companies' systems] are alike. It's not a cookie-cutter approach."

Also today, directory-migration software vendor Entevo Corp. said Compaq has licensed Entevo's Managed Migrations software to help convert 85,000 employees to Windows 2000.
