BMC Software Reports Tough Quarter

As expected, BMC Software Inc. (stock: BMCS) revealed disappointing first-quarter 2001 results. For the quarter ended June 30, revenue was $372.7 million, down 7% from $400.7 million for the same period last year.

Net earnings, excluding special charges, decreased 53% to $49.9 million. Earnings per share decreased 52% to 20 cents. Before an earnings warning earlier this month, analysts had been expecting the company to earn 46 cents per share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Reflecting special charges, net earnings for the quarter were $10 million, or 4 cents per share, for the quarter, compared with $16.4 million, or 7 cents a share, a year ago.

Max Watson, chairman, president and CEO of BMC Software, says he's disappointed with the companies OS/390 distributed system sales, but "is confident that this isn't a result of our losing business in competitive situations."
