Boosting Mobile Data Delivery

To help meet the demand for data delivered to mobile devices, Sun Microsystems said it plans to buy Pixo Inc., a privately held maker of Java-based software that manages the development, delivery, and billing of content accessed through cell phones and other wireless devices. Sun already offers Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition, for running applications on mobile devices, but Pixo lets Sun offer the full spectrum needed for mobile content delivery and management, says Eric Chu, director of the J2ME platform for Sun's software systems group. Pixo's clients include Bell Canada and European mobile application infrastructure provider End2End. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of Sun's 2004 fiscal year, which begins this week.
