Open XML: One Step Closer to Standardization?

CNET

A group of international delegates today wrapped up a weeklong meeting that could help decide whether Microsoft's Open XML document format should become an international standard. The purpose of the Ballot Resolution Meeting, held in Geneva, was to iron out technical issues. Interestingly, those in favor of Open XML say those issues were successfully resolved, while those opposed say they were not sufficiently addressed. One bone of contention: that Open XML, if passed, could make life much harder for millions of disabled people who rely upon accessibility-enhancing tools and technologies.

The International Organization for Standardization, for its part, remains mum. A decision is expected at the end of March.CNET
