In an effort to bulk up its security product suite, Computer Associates today acquired virtual private network (VPN) software maker Snare Networks Corp. for an undisclosed sum.
Snare's products include software that lets IT managers support and manage tunnels and encrypted communications between workers, regardless of location, over the Internet, other public networks, and private networks.
Snare's products will be available as standalone offerings as part of CA's eTrust product line and also with CA's Unicenter network and systems management platform. Until now, CA has lacked software that could perform encryption beyond person-to-person sessions, which fell short of enabling VPNs.
Integration of Snare products with Unicenter will enable IT managers for the first time to implement encryption on internal networks such as intranets and to manage the private connections.
All Snare employees will join CA, the latter said in a prepared statement. CA will begin rebranding the company's products as eTrust.
