Everybody has too much information to manage and too little time to do it. Computer Associates may be easing that problem by shipping the free Snapshot upgrade to its ARCserve 2000 Serverless Backup Option.
ARCserve 2000 is backup-and-recovery software that customers use to protect information. With serverless backup, customers can move data from storage systems to tape libraries without passing it through servers. Without this feature, the network gets bogged down because backup data uses up server capacity, while live information is trying to pass through. With serverless backup, intelligent agents still reside on the server to communicate with the storage systems, but data doesn't have to pass through anymore. The Snapshot upgrade is key to customers implementing the new serverless technology. With Snapshot, customers can perform the serverless backup while servers remain up and running.
So far, data movement hardware vendors Chapparal Network Storage, Crossroads Systems, and Pathlight Technology are supporting CA's software, which is based on the Extended SCSI Copy Command standard from the Storage Networking Industry Association. Gartner Group analyst Mark Nicolett says it's still early for this technology because not many customers own the right hardware for it. "Users need a storage area network in place with hardware that supports the extended copy standard that CA is using," he says. "Most customers are talking about sharing tape libraries."
