Cable & Wireless To Resell BackWeb Software
International telecom carrier Cable & Wireless plc next week will unveil a deal to provide push software from BackWeb Technologies Inc. to its top multinational customers to help them better distribute information across their intranets.
After giving its account teams time to learn about the software, Cable & Wireless expects to start selling it in April, with the possibility of using the package as part of a formal Cable & Wireless branded service at an unspecified future date.
"The future for this software would have to be as part of a branded service we'd offer to our customers, and I don't see anything that would keep us from doing that," says John Cobb, director of customer development at Cable & Wireless. He did not provide any details on timing, pricing, or packaging, however.
BackWeb says its Polite suite of push products let companies send information only when network capacity is available. The vendor also offers tools that instantly alert recipients to the arrival of time-sensitive information, while a reporting function confirms that end users have received the information.
"I see a huge demand for this software as a way for companies to push critical and updated information from their intranets to field sales forces so perhaps they can close deals before their competitors," says Allen Bonde, an analyst at Extraprise. "It can also help you better manage and distribute information across your intranet."
Although the BackWeb push software will initially be sold to companies served by Cable & Wireless' global accounts group, Cobb says it could possibly be sold to other customers.
The two companies will pursue joint marketing and promotion activities, according to BackWeb.
