What's believed to be the first shop to deploy a Linux-only IBM iSeries server is up and running. YKK USA, the world's largest zipper maker, is using it to support the Atlanta company's first customer portal.
Sarah Carnell, operations director at YKK, says she chose Linux over IBM's OS/400 operating system, which, while robust, wasn't as flexible in terms of upgrades or as easy-to-use as Linux for general business people. She also chose portal software and services from E One Commerce Group.
"We started with a business need for something friendly and easy to design," Carnell says. She says her team knows OS/400, and they might turn to it if Linux fails. "The feeling I get is that OS/400 will be outdated in a few years," she says. "It's destined for the has-been trail."
