CIO Leaves Wal-Mart For Dell

Dell Computer has hired former Wal-Mart Stores Inc. CIO Randy Mott as its technology chief.

Mott, who is 43 years old and a 22-year veteran of Wal-Mart, has been the retail giant's CIO since 1994. He was also InformationWeek's 1997 Chief of the Year. Kevin Turner, a 14-year IS veteran at Wal-Mart, will succeed Mott.

As senior VP and CIO at Dell, Mott will be an executive committee member reporting to Dell's office of the CEO and directly to Dell vice chairman Kevin Rollins. Mott, who will join the company March 6, will be responsible for the PC maker's global IT infrastructure.

Mott takes over for Dell VP of finance Jim Schneider, who became interim CIO in October when Jerome N. Gregoire resigned.

At Wal-Mart, Mott oversaw the adoption of such technologies as data mining and a highly efficient supply-chain and inventory-management system for the company's distribution centers and 4,000 stores.
