Desperate Yahoo Inks Search, Ad Deal With Google

In the face of declining revenues and stiff competition, Yahoo cozies up to rival Google in a deal similar to the one it struck with Microsoft in April.

Joe, you're not going to let Google off the hook, are you? I suppose then the difference is the proportion of mimicry to original ideas ... or maybe not even original ideas. Cool ideas done well. Yahoo has been on the shallow end of that spectrum since perhaps the early 2000s.

Yeah, but even Google isn't immune to mimicking.  Google+ (Facebook) and Google Buzz (Twitter) come immediately to mind.

Exactly, which is why I think the ought to learn (fast) that they need to come up with their own original ideas and not just copy other people's (Google's) product offerings.

Sure, not everything that Google touches turns to gold, but it keeps churning, churning, churning. Isn't that the whole basis of Alphabet? Even more churn? Yahoo isn't churning. It's mimicking.

To be fair, I think it's important to note that Yahoo is not a complete dud of a company -- but when compared to ad and search competitors like Google and Facebook, it looks extremely lackluster.  It still delivers an overwhelming number of ad impressions -- but those impressions are substantially lower than the number of impressions Facebook delivers.

Seth Godin explains that what happened to Yahoo was that once it struck it big, it started thinking and acting like a very risk-averse giant -- and stopped acting like the nimble startup that made it a success.  This has allowed Google to trample all over it.

@JoeStanganelli - I've often wondered if anyone actually uses any of those Google Apps.  I don't even know what I'm supposed to do with Google Plus and I just had to check to see if Google Wave was even still around (it's not).  Proof that not everything Google touches turns to gold.

Yahoo needs to reinvigorate their business.  A tough challenge, as it likely involves innovation and capturing of a cultural generation, with hopes it changes the stagnate perception it currently holds.

Yahoo unfortunately lost its groove.

Like bell bottoms of the 70's, Yahoo got stuck in the 90's and never was able to forge past it.  it was just a fad.  Google came along and capitalized on stagnant Yahoo, and continued to be a trend maker, building an expansive portfolio of projects that peeked people's curiosity.
