Microsoft Battles Google, Amazon In The Cloud

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella clarified the company's cloud strategy, argued competitors such as Amazon and Google can't match Microsoft's hybrid-oriented approach and enterprise expertise.

That's a good point, Tom. A Forrester analyst I know is fond of saying that the best management strategy is to choose devices and software that require little management.

That said, I think Microsoft is making progress. Its consolidating all of its device management tools and opening those tools so they can be used to manage all major device types-- iOS too, not just Windows. Done correctly, this could spare IT admins some complexity.

Some of Microsoft's new analysis tools, such as natural language queries in Power BI, are also intriguing because they bring user-friendliness to a field full of data scientists. Talking to execs at Microsoft, I think they'd like to empower more workers (including those who aren't in technical fields) to focus on data and to discover actionable business insights. If they can take the complexity out of data analysis and turn it into something user-friendly, I think that would be no insignificant feat. But as you point out, Microsoft needs to keep moving-- Google and others aren't sitting still.

I wonder how much serving enterprises matters when it would be better to provide a product that's not so complicated or unreliable that it requires service. If Google can get to that point, Microsoft's hand-holding will have less value.

Azure momentum
Microsoft has long made the "enterprise expertise" argument and labeled Google an advertising company that doesn't understand the enterprise. It hammered this message home when Office 365 was released and was competing with Google Apps. They'll keep hammering it home with Azure; it's a strong message given the Azure momentum and Microsoft's vast experience serving enterprises.
