Microsoft builds energy efficient data centers
Something I didn't know: Microsoft builds its modern data centers with power usage effectiveness ratings of 1.125, which is highly efficient, according to information on its Web site. The average enterprise data center is closer to 1.8-2.0. That is, twice a much power is brought into the center as is actually used to run compute equipment. Facebook's Prineville facility, a model of the type, had a PUE of 1.06-1.07, if I remember right. The main innovation is getting rid of electircity-driven chillers or air conditioners and using air movement over evaporation media instead. Microsoft doesn't build every data center it uses. In some cases, it's leasing space.
