Open source offers neutral ground to competing vendors
Well, Lorna, one that comes to mind was XenSource as it was founded in 2004. It had IBM, Oracle, HP, Sun Microsystems, Citrix, Dell, AMD, Intel and others behind it. But the KVM hypervisor came along and split the developer community, peeling off a significant following to itself. KVM is now part of Red Hat. Red Hat had broad backing in its early years and still does for its Enterprise Linux. Collabnet with its Subversion change management system has had broad backing. MuleSoft is showing the power of open source to neutralize the ground between competing vendors, allowing them to back a mutually beneficial development.
