CMGI To Acquire Equilibrium

In a move to bring content automation capabilities to its network of Internet companies, CMGI Inc. today unveiled plans to acquire Equilibrium, a privately held company that makes automated graphics-processing software.

Equilibrium, based in Sausalito, Calif., is developing infrastructure products--expected to be released in March--that CMGI says it will use to expand its reach in infrastructure technologies.

Although terms of the deal were not disclosed, Equilibrium says CMGI's financial backing will position the company to provide the first dynamic content infrastructure for the Internet. The deal is expected to close in January.

Founded in 1989, Equilibrium is the maker of DeBabelizer, a Web-development application that combines support for more than 100 file formats and a range of scriptable image-processing operations. It helps graphic designers save time by editing and converting graphic images into a drag-and-drop interface.

Through the acquisition, Equilibrium's 250,000 users will have access to the offerings of the CMGI network of Internet companies. Equilibrium's management and headquarters will remain unchanged.
