Collaboration Tool Offers Groupware Alternative



X-Collaboration Software Corp. this week will introduce abusiness-collaboration tool aimed at companies looking for alow-cost alternative to groupware. X-Collaboration.com letsusers in emerging enterprises work together on projects anddocuments on the Web, facilitating data gathering anddocument assembly, organization, publishing, and archiving.

The product consists of thin-client software on the front endand a hosted Java application server on the back end.Registered team members log on to the X-Collaboration.comapplication servers to access their project database, and usetheir desktop productivity applications, E-mail system, orWeb browser to create content to drag and drop onto the X-Collaboration.com whiteboard.

These files are automatically converted to Extensible MarkupLanguage documents called notecards. Users can type directlyonto the notecards, add links to Web pages, and manipulate,edit, and share the notecards with other team members whohave access rights and a Web browser. The tool creates avisual layout of the notecards according to the project ordocument's structure. X-Collaboration.com also provides ahistory of document creation.

The software can run as an intranet app across a company'sfirewall, an extranet app without a firewall, or acombination of the two. The service is priced at $500 peryear for a five-user license and 50 Mbytes of storage on X-Collaboration servers. Additional licenses are $95 each.
