Comdisco Inc. today threw its hat into the E-services arena with the introduction of a new Web Services division as well as a suite of Web availability services.
Web Services offers three levels of service, ranging in cost from $10,000 to $100,000 per month. Continuous Web-Availability Services is the division's premier offering and provides Comdisco customers with immediate failover capabilities in the event of an outage. It uses a combination of load balancing between geographically distributed primary and alternate sites, high-availability techniques for database synchronization, and high-speed networking.
Rapid Recovery, the second level of service offered by the new division, provides data protection and some data mirroring capabilities, which speed recovery time from the traditional Web-recovery services offering. The most basic offering, Web Disaster Recovery services, provides Comdisco customers with high-speed access to the Internet and firewall protection, but does not entitle the customer to dedicated Comdisco equipment in the event of an outage.
Comdisco also will begin offering managed primary site hosting services, whereas the company in the past has typically limited its offerings to secondary, or backup, hosting, according to Allan Graham, VP and general manager of Comdisco's Web Services. "Traditionally, we have not gotten involved in production services, or primary site hosting, but now that we're offering high-availability Web services, we feel it's a requirement that we become more active in the design and hosting of Web sites at our facilities," Graham says. This will give Comdisco customers the option of getting their primary and backup services from a single company."
