Compaq To Invest More Than $1 Billion In Service Providers

In an effort to find new growth markets, Compaq said today it has earmarked more than $1 billion to fund a spate of financing and service initiatives aimed at Internet and application service providers.

Through its Compaq Financial Services arm, the computer maker will make $600 million worth of low-cost, flexible financing available to ISPs and ASPs that buy Compaq servers and other products. Compaq's announcement comes as it continues to struggle with its corporate PC business, which lost $79 million in its most recent fourth quarter.

The company says it also has set aside an additional $400 million in investment capital that it will use to take equity stakes in emerging ISPs and ASPs. Keith McAuliffe, VP and general manager of Compaq's Service Provider business unit, says the programs are designed to address such companies' "unique business models and go-to-market strategies."
