Computer, Heal Thyself



Self-aware computers such as 2001's HAL may not be science fiction for much longer. IBM is increasing its investment into the creation of systems that can diagnose their own bugs, treat problems, and manage their daily operations. The company's new Autonomic Computing Group is dedicated to building IT systems that can operate with a minimum of human intervention. IBM has built autonomic technology into a number of products, including the new version of its DB2 database software, available Nov. 21.
