Counting On Innovation

Kevin Rollins, Dell's president and chief operating officer, last week at the TechX conference in New York extolled the virtues of low-cost technology standardization for driving business success. "Standardization is leading to innovation, in that it lets users focus more on how they can apply IT," Rollins said. Eighty percent of companies' IT budgets goes to improving and maintaining their infrastructures, with the rest going to innovative development work, he said. He'd like to see that 80-to-20 ratio reversed. "Innovation is how astutely you integrate technology, not how much you spend on it."
