Critical Path To Bolster Security With XETI Acquisition

In an effort to boost the security of its Internet messaging services, Critical Path Inc. announced today it will acquire XETI Inc. a provider of Java toolkits for public-key infrastructure (PKI) software.

Critical Path, in San Francisco, will incorporate XETI's PKI technology, which manages digital certificates that are used to verify the recipient of electronic messages, into its product line. Critical Path provides outsourced E-mail services to such companies as E-Trade, CompuServe, Network Solutions, and US West.

Critical Path says the acquisition will strengthen its ability to guarantee its customers' messages will be delivered securely to the correct recipient.

XETI, in Los Altos, Calif., makes JKIX, a Java product that lets developers build browser applets and Web-server plug-ins for secure messaging and online transactions without requiring in-depth PKI knowledge.

The deal comes on the heels of Critical Path's acquisition earlier this month of directory and messaging vendor Isocor in a stock transaction valued at $287 million. In June, Critical Path scooped up dotOne Corp., an E-mail outsourcer specializing in integrating messaging into existing IT systems.
