Dell Computer will begin selling high-speed interconnectdevices from Giganet Inc. later this year to let customersbuild multinode server clusters.
The devices include a Fibre Channel switch and host adaptersthat can transfer data among nodes considerably faster thanEthernet, Dell says. The company is making the technologyavailable in anticipation of Microsoft's Windows 2000Datacenter Server, an operating system due out next year thatwill let customers build clusters of up to four Wintelservers, up from today's limit of two.
Four-node clusters will improve the reliability andperformance of Wintel servers by letting them share resourcesand back up failed servers within a cluster. The interconnectdevices can also be used to build Oracle and IBM paralleldatabase clusters. Pricing for the devices will be availablelater this year.
