Alaskans Out In The Cold On iPhone

Alaskans won't be able to get the iPhone because of Apple's contractual obligations with carrier AT&T, reports the Alaska Daily News. The paper goes on to suggest ... well .. lying is such an ugly word, isn't it?

Alaskans won't be able to get the iPhone because of Apple's contractual obligations with carrier AT&T, reports the Alaska Daily News. The paper goes on to suggest ... well .. lying is such an ugly word, isn't it?

The paper suggests iPhone-hungry Alaskans travel down to "the lower 48," snag an iPhone, and lie and say that they live in Washington. Or get a friend to do the lying for them, and save on airfare. Eventually, AT&T will find out when it sees more calls originating from Alaska than from the telco's coverage area. But until then, those Alaskans will enjoy sweet, sweet iPhone goodness.

On Friday, most of the contiguous states will delight in the debut of the cell phone/music player/multimedia device promised to revolutionize how we dial. And, as per usual, Alaskans will be stuck in the telecommunication dark age sans iPhone.

AT&T has a five-year exclusive contract with Apple for iPhone. And they don't offer cell service here. Yep, it could be half a decade.

Maybe we can make string-and-cup phones and take turns holding a boom box up to them in emulation of the iPhone enlightenment.
