Dell can be a LOT better. They may be one of the first suppliers considered when consumer and SMB customers are looking to buy. However, as someone who deals with their web properties on a daily basis, I can tell you from experience, that they are often difficult to work with. Much more than they should be. And, it involves everything from shopping, ordering, and customer support (both sales and technical). Have you ever tried to order spare parts from Dell? It is painful at best.
I happen to like and use Dell frequently for our equipment and software buys. They have many things going right (mainly choice and price). Unfortunately, the whole experience frustrates me nearly every time. That, and I have been thru roughly 5 account reps in the last two years.
There are way too many customers here in the central Texas area with HP equipment in their shops. That should tell you something about loyalty to Dell. And, I dislike HP for a lot of reasons... so generaly shy away from using their products.
Bottom line - Dell needs to improve, streamline, and stabilize all of their business processes.
