Samsung Electronics hopes its next product launch doesn't generate any buzz. It won't, if it works. In June, the company will debut notebook PCs that dispense with hard drives entirely, relying instead on 32 Gbytes of flash memory for main storage. In addition to operating silently--they don't need fans to cool them--the notebooks, Samsung says, will boot more quickly, prove more durable, and use less battery power.

Microsoft Vista hasn't had a chance yet to disrupt much of anything, except the livelihood of developers, PC makers, and everyone else dealing with the operating system's many delays. Microsoft last week said Vista is ready for a final round of testing, adding that business customers will be able to buy the system in November. But if Vista's record is any indication, the launch date is nowhere near a solid bet.
