A look at emerging technology that's disruptive -- and that isn't.

RFID isn't just good for tracking items in supply chains, it's also effective at tracking luggage in airports. At least that's the hope at Hong Kong International Airport, which will be the first airport to implement end-to-end RFID-based bag tracking. A planned system will attach tags with integrated chips to all checked baggage and then sort and load luggage according to data on the tag. Other airports are testing similar systems.

Emotion detection, a cousin of speech analytics, is finding a home in call centers. Speech analytics monitors callers' word usage, recognizing the word "help," for example. Emotion detection, in contrast, can track voice volume and pitch to alert managers to angry callers. Forrester Research estimates the combined market for speech analytics and emotion detection to be $400 million annually.
