re: Does SharePoint Have Future As A Social Platform?
Seemingly, the primary advantage Box has on SharePoint is its user-friendly interface. But- as has been pointed out above- a major strength of SharePoint is its "breadth of capability". Sure, SharePoint is a beast. And maybe the menus and UI elements are somewhat ambiguous. But you can't have a super-simple interface for a highly complex piece of software. If you made SharePoint 'more user-friendly', it might demand reducing some of its functionality. And when Box attempts to add more functions to its fledgling platform, its user interface will need to get more complicated too.
So yes, SharePoint has a bright future ahead as a platform. That platform can be used for social networking/ social computing purposes. Or the SharePoint platform can be used to host a variety of other in-demand business applications, including software aimed at productivity, collaboration, document management, etc.
