Social is a hydra-like beast with many different iterations - customer communications, internal communications, publishing, etc. The social needs of a company will vary depending on its size, markets served, products offered, etc. Given this, it will be difficult, if not impossible for SharePoint to offer a complete set of social tools to serve the range of needs required by their customers. Add to this the pace of innovation in general and social in particular and it becomes impossible for SharePoint to serve as a one-stop social offering. Given this, SharePoint will continue to rely on 3rd party add-ons to meet niche social needs and to drive innovation in the social tools offered via SharePoint.
