E-Mail And IM Service For Low-Cost Cell Phones To Begin On Thanksgiving

The service stores messages on servers, enabling users to access them from their PCs later, but it won't operate with Verizon Wireless or Nextel handsets and users can't download attachments to their phones.

A service that provides instant messaging and abbreviated e-mail service for low-cost mobile phones is scheduled to get underway with a new campaign on Thanksgiving Day, according to an announcement from the provider of the service, Berggi.

The service stores messages on servers, enabling users to access them from their PCs later. The $9.99-a-month service has some limitations: It won't operate with Verizon Wireless or Nextel handsets, and users can't download attachments to their phones.

"Berggi was designed for the small screen and the behavioral subtleties for mobile consumers," Berggi's announcement states. "Unlike browser-based solutions, the Berggi service is accessed by downloading a small but robust thin client."

The firm has employees in Houston and Spain; venture financing was provided by Adara Venture Partners of Europe.

Berggi's CEO Barbur Ozden said the service was designed to operate on mid- to lower-end phones.
