Continental Airlines is looking to EDS to help it develop systems that are compatible with other airlines. The airline today signed an eight-year, $1.5 billion outsourcing agreement with EDS to expand Continental's services, such as interairline electronic ticketing and check-in for international travelers.
The contract replaces an existing 10-year deal the two companies inked in 1991. Under that arrangement, EDS was charged with developing technology to support Continental's relationships with airlines such as Northwest, America West, Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia, and Air France. The previous agreement held EDS responsible for developing E-ticketing capabilities for Continental. An EDS spokeswoman says the new agreement will expand E-ticketing capabilities to connect with other airlines.
"Creating a network for seamless travel is going to require a common infrastructure. Continental wants to become a leader in moving forward on that infrastructure development," the spokeswoman says. EDS will work on Continental's network infrastructure development to facilitate the compatibility efforts. The work will also include help desk, reservation systems, legacy application development, and maintenance, field services, and voice systems.
