Extraction Software Pulls ERP Data For Analysis Apps

Informatica Corp. has begun shipping software for extracting information from SAP R/3 and PeopleSoft enterprise resource planning systems for data analysis applications.

The new PowerConnect products extend Informatica's PowerCenter data integration system used for building data warehouses. PowerConnect for SAP R/3 and for PeopleSoft allows users to access the ERP systems' metadata and extract needed data.

For example, the PowerConnect for SAP R/3 software extracts data using SAP's ABAP proprietary programming language and provides access to all R/3 tables--including transparent, pool, and cluster tables--as well as SAP info hierarchies. PowerConnect for PeopleSoft utilizes that ERP system's metadata tables and catalog tables to provide access to all PeopleSoft objects, including records, panels, and trees. The extracted data can be combined with information from other sources, including relational databases and legacy flat-file systems.

Many organizations have implemented ERP systems to make their operations more competitive, says Mike Schiff, data warehousing strategies director at the Current Analysis market research firm. "But ultimately, to be competitive, you have to analyze the data that's in those ERP systems," he says. "And tools like these will allow them to do that."

Prices for the PowerConnect for SAP and PeopleSoft products begin at $55,000.
