Extranets Shine For Business Objects

French business-intelligence software maker Business Objects SA reported that its first-quarter extranet revenues rocketed 365% over the same quarter a year ago. Business-to-business extranet operations pulled in $5 million during the quarter, ended March 31, compared with $1.1 million a year ago.

That jump helped boost net revenue 47% during the same period, from $49.5 million last year to $72.6 million this year. Net income for the quarter was $7 million, or 16 cents per share, compared with $3.2 million, or 8 cents, a year ago.

In January, the company launched an extranet version of its performance-analysis product, WebIntelligence, which gives suppliers and customers the same access to analysis tools as internal users.

"Global corporations are making enterprisewide commitments to deliver information beyond just those [working] at the company, but also to business partners and suppliers," says Mark Smith, an analyst with Meta Group. "Because license prices are high, customers are negotiating larger deals to get discounts."

License fees for Business Objects' business-intelligence platform alone accounted for $45 million of total revenue.
