Networking hardware vendor Fore Systems Inc. entered the directory-enabled network market yesterday with the introduction of its Extensible Directory Services Agent.
EDSA is a policy server that Fore is integrating into all products in its ESX line of switches. The offering will let an administrator oversee his company's network, and also store policies concerning access, traffic, and prioritization from the same directory repository that manages information about users, applications, and network resources. Once the switch is installed, it will communicate its location and status to the repository so the administrator can also centrally monitor the inventory of switches and routers on the network. EDSA is compatible with Novell Directory Services, Netscape's Directory Server, and Microsoft's soon-to-be-released Active Directory.
In addition, Fore will offer a policy-based network- management console that will let an administrator view a complete directory tree of all switch elements on the network from the directory server. Network policies can then be set on the highest levels and will automatically trickle down throughout the directory tree. Both products are available immediately and are being bundled into Fore's ForeView and ForeThought lines of networking packages at no additional charge.
