Google Inc. on Wednesday started offering on Google Earth, which delivers satellite views of geographic locations, multimedia content from the Discovery Network and others.
The overlays are available by clicking a "featured content" checkbox in the desktop software's sidebar. In doing so, users checking out individual locations will automatically see any additional information that's available.
For example, the Discovery overlay enables travel buffs to view video segments to learn more about the history and significance of various world landmarks, national parks, American and European cities, and African locations.
Other content providers include the United Nations Environmental Program, the National Park Service, the Jane Goodall Institute, and Turn Here. The institute does animal research, while Turn Here offers city video guides for travel, restaurants, hotels, local events and music around the globe.
