BI Tools Help Deliver Record 2005 Sales For SAS

Revenue at the privately held software giant grows 10 percent to $1.68 billion.
SAS experienced revenue growth last year -- for the 29th year in a row -- as 2005 sales came in at $1.68 billion, up 10 percent from last year.

Increasing demand for SAS Enterprise BI Server, as well as for applications designed for specific industries, drove growth last year, SAS said. The world's biggest privately held software company is not required to report annual financial results, but regularly announces them anyway.

SAS said it was profitable for the year but did not quantify earnings.

SAS 9 Enterprise Intelligence platform includes data integration, storage, analytics and business intelligence elements. The company intends to continue pushing the tools this year. "That's our focus for 2006," said SAS CEO Jim Goodnight in a statement.

The company did not specify sales growth rates for its business intelligence tools, however. SAS debuted SAS Enterprise BI Server, a key component of SAS 9 Intelligence, last April.

Among tools for specific industries, banking applications remained the leading line for SAS in 2005, with sales growing 10 percent compared with 2004 and generating 28 percent of industry-specific revenue. Retail-based revenue grew 20 percent, education 16 percent, insurance 12 percent and government 11 percent.

Forty-six percent of SAS sales came the Americas in 2005, 44 percent from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the remainder from Asia.
