Re: SSA, make your cloud choice
Thanks for weighing in on a couple of the options Charlie.  As to the question of whether SSA should be building its own private cloud, I believe the issue is SSA has made a significant investment in consolidating data centers just before cloud computing started gaining traction in govt.  Given the nature of SSA's data -- with all that personally identifiable information -- and the number of queries it must get daily on that data, it makes sense for SSA to go the private cloud route.  It wil be interesting to see though, whether it is creating another customized IT operation, or whether it will truly harness some of the commercial software like the kind you suggest.

SSA, make your cloud choice
SSA has several possible choices before it and I would say it's good to proceed to evaluate them as a department, not hire outside consulting.  One obvious choice, given its VMware virtualizoed environment, is to deploy VMware vCloud Director and map its operation with vCloud Hybrid Service.  Another is an OpenStack cloud software combined with an OpenStack provider for hybrid operations. Hybrid service can also come from Amazon and Rackspace, which recognize and accept VMware-based workloads. Other alternatives?

Yikes!
I find it a bit disconcerting that the SSA is "searching for software packages" in order to build its own public cloud. I appreciate the agency's desire to make the most of technology, but shouldn't it just skip all the drama and hire Accenture (or a similar company) from the start?
