Cognos Introduces Modeler For Lotus Domino Data

Cognos debuted a data modeler designed to let users of Cognos 8 business intelligence software tap information stored in IBM Lotus Notes applications and databases.

The new application, called Cognos 8 Business Intelligence Data Modeler for IBM Lotus Domino, also will let users present and manage Cognos reports from within the IBM Websphere Portal and Workplace Managed Client.

"Global organizations have leveraged the unique capabilities in Lotus Notes to build thousands of applications, and most of those applications were created before business intelligence became a critical business requirement," said Cognos marketing VP Leah MacMillan in a statement. Like most business intelligence vendors, Cognos has sought to position its software as an organization-wide BI "standard" by easing customers' ability to tap multiple, heterogeneous data sources.

The new tool lets users select Lotus Notes data sources, tables and columns, and label them with names without forcing changes to existing Lotus Notes apps. The data modeler optimizes data for quick access and creates a metadata model for Cognos 8. That data can then be joined to other data sources without extra coding work, Cognos said.

Cognos co-developed the new data modeler with Sun and Son, an IBM partner that specializes in user collaboration tools.
