Dell Takes Aim At Apple iMac

The Studio One 19 monitor/PC combo has options that include a touch screen, Blu-ray disk burner, facial-recognition security, and the choice of one of five colors.

Dell on Thursday introduced an all-in-one desktop for the home that has the Apple iMac in its sights.

The Studio One 19 is a combination 18.5-inch monitor and Windows Vista PC that sits on a metal stand. The widescreen display, which has a resolution of 1,366 by 768 pixels, has integrated stereo speakers and is available in five colors: white, Tuscan red, navy blue, powder pink, or charcoal.

"More and more people are making the kitchen the center of their entertainment and computing experience and the Studio One 19 is the ideal system for that need," Alex Gruzen, senior VP of Dell’s consumer products, said in a statement. "The Studio One 19 is about lifestyle and design and is very affordable for the family."

The price of the system starts at $699. Add a touch screen, and the starting price rises to about $900.

The Studio One 19 comes with a number of options, such as an Intel processor from the lower-end Celeron to a Core 2 quad core. Dell also gives the option of Nvidia GeForce 9200 or 9400 integrated graphics, and up to 4 GB of memory and a 750-GB hard disk drive.

Other options include integrated Wi-Fi, a Web camera, Blu-ray disc burner, and facial-recognition security.

In comparison, Apple's latest iMacs, which the company introduced last week, start with a $1,199 20-inch model that includes a 2.66-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of memory, a 320-GB hard drive, and Nvidia GeForce 9400M integrated graphics. Dell has not released a complete price list for the Studio One 19, so it's not possible to do a component-to-component comparison. The top-of-the-line version of the Apple iMac starts at $2,199, and none of the iMacs has a touch screen.

Dell plans to make its all-in-one system available in retail outlets in Japan and on Dell's Web site March 23. The system is scheduled to be available at U.S. retailers and in other countries in the spring.
