Smart Office 9.0.3, launched this week at the Lawson Conference and User Exchange in San Diego, also operates as the front end for the company's business intelligence tools. The updated version enables greater personalization of employees' desktops, making them more specific to workers' daily tasks.
"Almost everyone needs to be able to get information from enterprise applications -- not just the power users," Dean Hager, senior VP of product management for Lawson, said in a statement.
For example, project managers could build a widget that displays current spend versus available budget to better monitor costs. They could also access Microsoft Office applications directly from Smart Office to work in Outlook or Excel, while continuing to monitor the budget widget.
Additional new features includes an InfoBrowser widget that displays problems and exceptions, and the ability to work offline in Excel. The upgrade also includes shortcuts to information in Outlook.
Lawson, which develops and sells enterprise resource planning applications, has posted a demonstration of the Smart Office upgrade on its Web site.
