Open Text Takes Aim At Microsoft Exchange Server 2007

The enterprise content management vendors upgrades its Livelink ECM suite with tight integration with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.
Open Text, a maker of enterprise content management software, has introduced the latest version of its email management software, which has been upgraded with tight integration with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

In general, Livelink ECM -Email Management enables organizations to apply their centralized records management policies through folders customized for individual departments, users or functions. With the latest product, each message arriving in Microsoft's Outlook email client automatically inherits the centralized record classification assigned to a folder when users drag and drop emails into the folder. Based on the classification, the message is assigned an appropriate retention and disposition lifecycle.

Other capabilities include automatic or interactive archiving. Users can drag and drop email in the archive, or the system can automatically scan folders and apply pre-configured archiving and records management rules.

The system also provides audit trails to define the history of activities associated with emails considered important business records. Users, for example, can review details such as when and who deleted an email.

Other features include comprehensive search capabilities and the ability to access archived emails in the same way messages are accessed on the server. Archived email can be edited, forwarded, or moved as needed. In addition, email content can be offloaded to inexpensive media to improve the performance of the email system and reduce storage costs.

Open Text also offers records management software for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, and has worked with Microsoft in offering products that extend the latter company's technologies into vertical markets, such as the life sciences and law firms.

Pricing for the latest product upgrade, introduced Tuesday, was not released.

In other Open Text news, the company is providing integration between its Livelink ECM suite with FaceTime Communications' technology for securing, managing and monitoring public and enterprise instant messaging systems, as well as Internet-based telephony service Skype, and social networking sites. FaceTime can work with Microsoft Live Communications Server and IBM Lotus Sametime.

When combined with FaceTime technology, Livelink ECM enables customers to selectively retain, archive and destroy IM conversations to meet legal requirements and corporate policies.
