Time Division Duplex LTE, commonly called TDD-LTE, is a version of LTE that has been initially targeted at emerging markets like China and India, although interest in the technology for possible wider use has been increasing. TDD-LTE could serve as a bridge between LTE and WiMax, some mobile experts believe.
Also at the Shanghai event, Motorola Networks' Bruce Brda said thousands of visitors are expected to use Motorola's TDD-LTE technology. Brda, who is senior vice president of the Motorola unit, said: "We will be demonstrating Motorola's ability and readiness to commercialize this next-generation 4G technology in 1010."
Qualcomm is exhibiting its Mobile Data Modem MDM9200 with 2x2 MIMO in the 2.3GHZ band. The device, Qualcomm said, is a multi-mode, single-chip 3G/LTE solution that supports both FDD and TDD modes of LTE.
Qualcomm's Cristiano Amon said the firm is committed to working with its customers to bring TDD-LTE products to market by 2011. Motorola, already noted, is hard at work on developing products based on the Qualcomm components. Amon, who is senior vice president, Cellular Products Group, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, said: "LTE TDD enables operators to utilize their unpaired spectrum assets effectively and to offer users an excellent mobile broadband experience."
Qualcomm noted that its MDM9200 is the first integrated multi-mode, single-chip 3G/LTE solution that supports both iterations of Category 3 LTE. Qualcomm recently won a slot of 20MHz TDD spectrum in India
